About the project

Glenorchy City Council recognised the need to develop a resource to raise awareness of the frequency and impact of youth binge drinking. To engage local young people, it was felt necessary for this to be an innovative, youth driven project.

A proposal was developed in consultation with young people and education and service providers who identified social media as the most effective tool for engagement and education.

The Australian Government recognised the potential benefits of the project and provided funding of $245 000 (through the National Binge Drinking Strategy - Community Level Initiatives stream).

All elements of the project, including the party, language, real stories, and use of social media were developed with local young people and their experiences, ideas and advice.

Some of the project objectives were as follows:

  • To develop an online interactive resource, by young people, for young people, that educates people aged 12-24 years, about the harms of binge drinking
  • To raise awareness about the harms of binge drinking with a focus on high risk activities and situations that impact young people in the local community
  • Encourage young people to recognise high risk situations and activities, monitor their behaviour and make health promoting choices to prevent and reduce binge drinking
  • To encourage and support the development of programs that promote a change in the drinking culture among young people at a local, community level
